Salford is a city located immediately to the West of Manchester city centre. The River Irwell marks the border between the two cities. Salford Quays once played a major role for the city, unloading container ships bringing the cotton into the North West for the textile industry. Following the decline of cotton, this area was rejuvenated with modern housing and has now become the home to BBC in the North West at the Media City complex.
Salford's most famous artist, L.S Lowry lends his name to many of the attractions in the area. The Lowry Centre in the Quays sees many touring theatre productions. The centre also boasts a large collection of the artists work. Across the Ship Canal from the Lowry Centre is the award winning Imperial War Museum of the North. Other attractions in the area include Ordsall Hall, the Working Class Movement Library, Salford Museum and Art Gallery and Salford Arts Theatre. Old Trafford football ground likes close to Salford, but the main sporting ground in the area is the rugby team Salford Reds.
